Winter Wool Lust from the Catwalk

For someone with zero tolerance for cold temperatures, the weather outside right now is still on the wrong side of frightful. Those cold winter nights shivering outside at a bus stop with only the steam from a box of chips to warm me have been forgotten as soon as Fashion Week started up.

The Fall/Winter 2011 shows are in full swing right now in London after kicking off in New York the week before and there is nothing like winter clothing lust to make me forget my intolerance for temperatures anywhere below 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

I’ve always loved fall and winter clothing so the February shows are the ones I look forward to the most. Thick cable-knit tights, amazing structured coats, chunky knit scarves, over-sized fur hats, well-crafted leather boots and of course the winter bag with appropriately heavy hardware to balance your chunky knitted sartorial choices.

Summer shopping always seems like a bit of a chore. I have a few sad sundresses swinging in my closet along with a small collection of American Apparel cotton t-shirt dresses and flat sandals. I have to be surgically removed from my black opaque tights every May. I just can’t muster up the excitement for airy flips of fabric designed to show as much flesh as possible. I’m not a prude -I just do not enjoy summer clothes at all. I’ll take a leather shift dress and some black suede ankle boots anyday.

A few highlights from the Fall/Winter 2011 shows so far and what I’m looking forward to next winter.

Only 170 more sleeps until the next time I can buy more wool tights. Yes!

BURBERRY

Finding the perfect coat is an art form at Burberry where Christopher Bailey sent out models wearing magnificently structured coats in shades of red, orange, green, powder blue, yellow and black check in every shape you could want in a coat wardrobe.

TOPSHOP UNIQUE

Never disappointing, the Topshop Unique show was a lesson in how to be a modern day Cruella Deville, complete with the furry dalmation coat, black dresses and severe hairstyle. Difference being that this Cruella wasn’t afraid to show her soft side by wearing dog print sweaters and little black and white polka dots. I loved the poufy little fur balls stuck randomly onto different outfits. Subtle and practical it’s not.

PROENZA SCHOULER

The Pendleton Navajo print popping up everywhere from Urban Outfitters to Opening Ceremony has made it a bit too ubiquitous. Inspired by a road trip to Santa Fe, Proenza Schouler have managed to design a collection that somehow makes Navajo type prints inspired by Native American blankets look cool and edgy rather than a bit too utilitarian and bohemian. According to Style.com, they designed their own prints and pixelated them. I’ll take whatever is splashed all over those velvet trousers please.

MARC JACOBS

Polka dot lovers can look forward to an polka dot explosion next fall. Head to toe dots in every size paired with dotty tights and latex shirts – Marc Jacobs manages to make polka dots look grown up and a bit severe. Take away the odd latex berets designed by Stephen Jones and the button up latex shirts and you have the perfect outfit to wear underneath your big orange coat this fall.
